The record number is a numeric expression which is rounded to an integer to specify a record within a file. The first record is one. BDAT and regular files allow random access by specifying a record number in the I/O statement. The record length for regular files is always one. The record length for BDAT files is defined when the file is created with the CREATE BDAT statement.
