MODBUS advice, please.

Hi Folkes,

We have used HTBasic with HPIB/GPIB to talk to an Agilent 34970A data acquisition & switch unit with great success for many years.
We would now like to add a new oxygen analyser instrument to our system which will only provide optimum resolution if we use MODBUS.
I would be very interested to hear advice on how to approach MODBUS communication in HTBasic.
Thus far I am thinking of using the ICS 4899A GPIB to Modbus interface. Would that be overkill?
Is there a simple way to use serial communication directly without having to worry about packet formatting?
